DUCTLESS AIR CONDITIONING
Central air conditioning systems use a system of ducts that deliver conditioned air throughout a home. There was a time when most homes without ductwork had no choice but to have very noisy and expensive window air conditioners. These would also need to be installed in every room needing a certain amount of cooling. Although relatively new to the United States, ductless air conditioning has been in use in Europe and Asia for decades. Most people in the U.S. are not familiar with ductless air conditioning although these systems are known to have many benefits over standard systems. Ductless air conditioning uses a split-system design with an outside unit connected to a wall or ceiling mounted blower fan to deliver cool and dehumidified air to a given area.

Ductless air conditioners are well known for the concept of 'spot cooling.' This is especially useful in various commercial, office, or areas that have computers, machinery, and the like, that require specific temperatures to be maintained. They are widely used in multi-family houses, schools, restaurants, cinema theaters, and auditoriums. This feature even helps to conserve energy. Ductless air conditioners prove to be quite useful in the home, as well. They can also be a good choice for room additions, where extending or installing distribution ductwork is not feasible. They do not affect the interiors and do not have to be shifted with the onset of the colder season. Better security is a reality with a ductless air conditioner installation. This is because there is no chance of any entry possible, which can happen with the traditional style of air conditioners, where an intruder can access a home once removing a window unit.

Ductless air conditioners
are lightweight and are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors to blend with any design scheme. The outdoor units are designed to be efficient and durable and are also structured to blend in easily with the surroundings, as these are smaller than the conventional units.

Due to the advantages that the ductless air conditioners have over central air conditioners, they are becoming more and more popular these days. The ductless air conditioning energy cost is far less then that of a normal duct air conditioning system. The reason for this is simple physics... hot air rises, cool air falls.

In most cases, a duct system will have to take the colder, heavier air from the bottom and then force it back up into a home, office or building... energy that is lost as air travels through the ductwork (think of cooled air passing through a duct in a super-hot attic, or hot air through a cold basement)... whereas a ductless system places the evaporator up high and lets the cold air naturally fall down without having to use any traditional blowers to force the air. Coolant is cooled in the outside unit and then sent, via copper tubing, to the inside unit where it is passed through a system that looks very similar to a radiator. The air is then fan-blown out from there into the room or zone where it will fall from the top to the bottom. By continually taking the hot air that rises and cooling it at the top, the room or zone will stay continually cool. This gravity effect is what makes split ductless air conditioning systems different. By using gravity, a ductless air conditioning system can save a ton of energy.

Also, generally speaking, there are less moving parts and components to a ductless system as opposed to a system with ducts. By making it easier to work on and maintain, this lowers the overall cost of ownership for a ductless air conditioner system. There is a lot less stress placed on the overall system when using a ductless air conditioning system. This type of unit allows cooling (and heating) a home, office, building, room or zone with little evasion, less cost, and higher reliability. Cost per hour of operation for a ductless air conditioning system is far less then a ducted system for all of these reasons.

In addition, a ductless heat pump can also be incorporated with the air conditioning system to completely heat and cool a home, office, building, room or zone without having any ductwork. As they become more popular, more and more people are realizing that they can do the ductless air conditioning installation on their own and are saving themselves hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

This Is Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner Advantages...

With the elimination of ductwork, ductless air conditioning systems are inherently more efficient than ducted systems. Traditional ducted systems are subject to the loss of efficiency that occurs as heated or cooled air travels through ducting. In essence, these types of systems aren't simply controlling the temperature of the air inside the home, office or building; they're also battling against the extreme temperatures of the air in the home's attic or the setoff in the office or building where ducting is typically located. Duct losses can account for more than thirty percent of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic or setoff.

As a retrofitting measure, ductless air conditioning offers a number of advantages over window unit air conditioners and ducted systems. Retrofitted ducted systems sacrifice the interior space of the home, office or building to accommodate the addition of ducting shafts or soffits. These additions can be costly and can create design and engineering problems. Window units are generally less energy efficient, sacrifice window space and functionality and require unsightly power cords.

Additional air handlers can be added as needs demand and budget permits, provided the compressor unit is capable of handling the additional load demand. If future expansion is a possibility, this should be factored in when initially selecting a system.

The main advantage of the ductless mini split air conditioner is its small size and flexibility for zoning or cooling individual rooms. Many models can have as many as four indoor evaporators or air handlers (for four zones or rooms) connected to one outdoor unit. The number depends on how much cooling is required for the home, office or building, or each room or zone (which in turn is affected by how well the home, office or building is insulated). Since each of the zones will have its own thermostat, the temperature and humidity level of a particular zone is normally only relevant when occupied (unless machinery or equipment, such as computer or server, optimal temperature must be maintained). This will save energy and money. The hand-held remote controlled thermostat makes it easier to turn the system on and off when it's positioned high on a wall or suspended from a ceiling.

Ductless mini split air conditioners possess several amenities. Microprocessor control helps to ensure that both humidity and temperature levels within a room or zone remain comfortable at all times. Necessary adjustments to the temperature can be made from the comfort of a chair, couch, or bed using an infrared wireless remote control unit with an easy-to-read LED. Ductless mini split air conditioners possess louvers which provide air sweep control by helping to direct air flow in the desired direction. With this caliber of control, the louvers can be moved up and down so the air flow sweeps throughout the room or zone, covering all of the different areas for better coverage. Setting a ductless mini split air conditioner in dry mode allows the fan and compressor to work intermittently so control is precise and specific to the temperature in a room or zone. This adjustment makes the dehumidification of a room or zone more efficient. In the case of a heat pump, once the functions, adjustments and settings are set, the automatic changeover (from cooling to heating, and vice versa) ensures the right cycle is running, which is based upon a room or zone temperature and even upon the time of day or night. The ductless mini split air conditioner night setback mode automatically increases and then resets the temperature by two degrees after a thirty-minute period and then another two degrees in the next thirty minutes. For a heat pump, the system does just the opposite by reducing the temperature by four degrees after thirty minutes. In both cases, more energy is saved but the temperature of the room or zone is never such that the person is uncomfortable.

A ductless air conditioning system provides more comfort than a central or window air conditioning system as it is more efficient and has more cooling capacity than a central or window air conditioning system.

Some models of ductless mini split air conditioners have built-in filters, which are capable of removing larger allergens more effectively than central air conditioners. Thus, they purify the air. Also the filters used in ductless air conditioners can be cleaned and used again unlike the filters of central air conditioners, which require replacement.

Ductless mini split air conditioners are often easier to install than other types of space conditioning systems. Most manufacturers of this type of system can provide a variety of lengths of connecting conduits. If necessary, an outdoor unit can be located as far away as fifty feet from the indoor evaporator or air handler. This makes it possible to cool rooms or zones on the front side of a home, office or building with the condenser or compressor in a more advantageous or inconspicuous place on the outside of the home, office or building.

Common Problems With Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioners...


One of the most common air conditioning problems is improper operation. If an air conditioner is on, be sure to close the home, office or building windows and outside doors. For room air conditioners, isolate the room or a group of connected rooms as much as possible from the rest of the home, office or building.

Other common problems with existing air conditioners result from faulty installation, poor service procedures, and inadequate maintenance. Many times, the refrigerant charge (the amount of refrigerant in the system) does not match the manufacturer's specifications. If proper refrigerant charging is not performed during installation, the performance and efficiency of the unit is impaired. Unqualified service technicians often fail to find refrigerant charging problems or even worsen existing problems by adding refrigerant to a system that is already full.

Air conditioner manufacturers generally make rugged, high quality systems. If an air conditioner fails, begin by checking any fuses or circuit breakers. Let the unit cool down for about five minutes before resetting any breakers.

If an air conditioner is low on refrigerant, either it was undercharged at installation, or it leaks. If it leaks, simply adding refrigerant is not a solution. A trained technician should fix any leak, test the repair, and then charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant. Remember that the performance and efficiency of an air conditioner is greatest when the refrigerant charge exactly matches the manufacturer's specification, and is neither undercharged nor overcharged. Refrigerant leaks can also be harmful to the environment.

If there is inadequate maintenance, and the filters and air conditioning coils are allowed to become dirty, the air conditioner will not work properly, and the compressor or fans are likely to fail prematurely.

The compressor and fan controls can wear out, especially when the air conditioner turns on and off frequently, as is common when a system is oversized. Because corrosion of wire and terminals is also a problem in many systems, electrical connections and contacts should be checked during a professional service call.

Room air conditioners feature a thermostat sensor, located behind the control panel, which measures the temperature of air coming into the evaporative coil. If the sensor is knocked out of position, the air conditioner could cycle constantly or behave erratically. The sensor should be near the coil but not touching it; adjust is position by carefully bending the wire that holds it in place.

When it's humid outside, check the condensate drain to make sure it isn't clogged and is draining properly. Room air conditioners may not drain properly if not mounted level.
HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS
A heat pump is a device that uses a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. Heat pumps are usually used to pull heat out of the air to heat a home, office or building. They can also be switched into reverse to cool a home, office or building. Heat pumps and air conditioners operate in very similar ways.

Heat pumps are a unique kind of heating system because they can do the work of both a furnace and an air conditioner. Thus, there is no need to install separate systems to heat and cool a home, office or building. Heat pumps work extremely efficiently because they simply transfer heat rather than burn fuel to create heat.

Heat pumps work best in moderate climates. Utilizing a heat pump rather than an air conditioner and a furnace may help to save money on a utility bill. Most heat pumps are somewhat limited by the cold, however, so it is important to learn which kind of heat pump is best for a given climate before installing one in a home, office or building. Installing the wrong kind of heat pump can increase energy costs

What To Look For In A Heat Pump...

When shopping for a heat pump, consideration should be given for the SEER rating of a given system; the most common method in which manufacturers rate the efficiency of a given system. A higher SEER rating indicates higher efficiency. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, and is a ratio of how much energy (measured in BTUs) is pumped outside in cooling mode divided by the electricity used (in watts) for cooling. Look for a SEER rating between 13 and 20.

Variable speed, DC Inverter Technology is the reference standard in ductless mini-split heat pumps for it's outstanding, rapid cooling had heating power. As soon as a targeted temperature is reached, a system utilizing this technology automatically adjusts current frequency temperature fluctuation. It also provides energy savings (which reduces the utility bill) as well as quieter operation.

An Inverter compressor is designed to vary it's speed as the demands in the room change. Inverter compressors are designed to soft start therefore causing no dips in power supply. Single phase AC power is supplied to the outdoor unit where it is rectified and converted into DC. The input frequency is then modified to allow the compressor to run at a variety of speeds. As the compressor speed decreases, the amount of refrigerant entering the indoor unit also decreases. This results in a more comfortable environment as the unit only produces the appropriate amount of cooling or heating required at that time - no more temperature swings.

Inverter compressors have been shown to reduce power consumption by as much as 60% when compared to conventional fixed speed equivalents.

Heat Pump Maintenance...

If an air-source heat pump is used on a regular basis, the filters should be cleaned or changed about once a month... three months if the heat pump is only run periodically. Keep fans and coils clean and free of debris. Make sure the power to the unit is off before tackling this type of cleaning. The outdoor unit should be kept level on its support surface. A heat pump should be inspected by a professional once every year or two.

Heat pump maintenance is important. Small problems that are not addressed early can lead to very expensive compressor problems later. And since maintaining a heat pump is more technical than caring for the average heating system, a professional service technician should be called when the heat pump malfunctions.

There are a few things a consumer can do to identify and possibly fix a heat pump problem before calling for professional help. First, if the system isn't working, make sure that a circuit breaker hasn't been tripped or a fuse has been blown. Check the thermostat to make sure it is working properly. Change the filter if it's dirty. Make sure the condensate drainage line is not blocked.

If a heat pump has been off for more than an hour because of a blown fuse, a tripped circuit breaker, or a utility power failure, the unit should not be operated for about six to eight hours, especially if the temperature is 50 degrees or lower. The lubricant in the pump's reservoir may be too cool to circulate properly and may cause damage to the valves of the unit.

Because heat pumps can contain hazardous materials, there should be no attempt to try to fix a major problem without professional assistance, as injury may result from handling a broken device as well as causing a chemical leak.

A heat pump should last between 10 and 30 years. Keep in mind that technology may change before a heat pump has worn out whereby the heat pump may outlast a technician's ability to service it. New technologies may make heat pumps safer and more efficient.

This Is How Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioners Work...
A ductless air conditioning system consists of four parts:

First, a very quiet indoor air-distribution or evaporator unit which is housed in an enclosure, typically called an  "air handler," equipped with    a blower fan and filters.

Air handlers for home use can measure up to eight inches deep by eleven inches high by thirty to forty inches long and are installed on interior walls, usually near the ceiling.

Second, copper refrigerant tubing, power cable, suction tubing, and a condensate    drain tubing, which are routed through a two and one half   inch conduit, run through the exterior wall, all which link the indoor and outdoor units. This connection is commonly called   a "line set."

Third, a very quiet outdoor compressor/condenser unit which is placed outside the exterior wall of a home, office   or building, and linked to the indoor unit through the conduit.

Fourth, a remote controlled thermostat unit.

Ductless air conditioners are also known as split system      air conditioners or mini split systems. It is the smaller indoor unit that provides cool, dehumidified air throughout the home, office or building. This is made possible by refrigerated coils in both the indoor and outdoor units. One of them takes away the warmer air from the inside. The other provides cooler and refrigerated air. The system is designed in such a way that it has a thermostat control and also a very quiet blower fan that helps to move the air around the unit in the home, office or building in a very efficient manner. The indoor unit samples the air and dehumidifies so that the actual temperature can be higher while feeling much cooler.
This Is How Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioners Are Installed...
Ductless mini split air conditioners are very easy to install and can also be operational in a matter of a few hours. A home owner can install it by following the instructions contained in the manual or get it installed by an expert. The outdoor condenser/compressor needs to be set up adjacent to the outside of the exterior wall of the area to be air conditioned, and placed on a solid, flat surface so that it can remain stable. A concrete base or slab can be used, or other strong and resilient, flat surfaces. The unit can also be mounted on the exterior wall by the use of mounting brackets. Once the small two and one half inch hole is drilled for the conduit through which is routed the copper refrigerant tubing, power cable, suction tubing, and condensate drain tubing, all that is left to do is to install the mounting plate on the wall for the indoor unit, hang the indoor evaporator or air handler unit(s) high on the wall, and connect the tubing and the electrical power line. Once the air handler is installed, most of the job is done. Preferably, a licensed HVAC technician connects the tubing and the electrical power line, and then purges the system for initial startup with the use of professional HVAC instruments. Home owners and other end-consumers who decide to attempt initial connections and startup on their own may void the warranty if damage occurs.
This Is How Heat Pumps Work...
There are many different kinds of heat pumps, but they all operate on the same basic principle of heat transfer. Heat transfer means that rather than burning fuel to create heat, a device moves heat from one place to another. Heat naturally flows uphill, which means that heat tends to move from a location with a high temperature to a location with a lower temperature. A heat pump uses a small amount of energy to switch that process into reverse, pulling heat out of a relatively low-temperature area, and pumping it into a higher temperature area. In a heat pump, this heat is transferred from a heat source (e.g. the air) into a heat sink (e.g. a home, office or building).

The reversing valve is a very versatile part of a heat pump. It reverses the flow of the refrigerant so that the system begins to operate in the opposite direction. Instead of pumping heat outside of a home, office or building, the heat pump releases it, just like an air conditioner. The refrigerant now absorbs heat on the outdoor side of the unit and flows to the inside where the heat is released and the refrigerant cools and flows back outdoor unit to pick up more heat.

Air-source heat pumps use a fan in an outdoor unit to bring air over refrigerant-filled coils. Two sets of these coils transfer heat indoors, where the heat is blown away from the coils by another fan and distributed through a home, office or building.

A mini-split heat pump connects an outdoor air-source unit to a single indoor unit, or to multiple indoor units. Ductless mini-split systems are useful for retrofitting a home, office or building with a heat pump system, as their locations outside and inside the home, office or building are flexible, and installation only requires a two and one half inch conduit to come through the wall. The indoor air handlers for a mini-split system may be installed in the wall, and are relatively small.
Pros And Cons Of Heat Pumps...
Heat pumps can help consumers save on utilities, but they have limitations. First, they tend to be somewhat ineffective in any climate where the outdoor air temperature falls near or below freezing on a regular basis. This is because moving heat from a very cold area to a hotter one takes more energy than moving heat between two areas with a more moderate temperature difference. There's also more heat available ousted in a moderate climate than in a cold climate. It's important to note that even in a cold climate, there's still heat in the outside air to be pumped indoor, but the unit needs to work harder to extract the heat that is available. Supplemental energy may be required to make the heat pump produce enough warmth to comfortably heat a home, office or building when the temperature falls below freezing.

The heat produced by heat pumps isn't as intense as the heat produced by a gas or oil-burning furnace. Some people used to traditional furnaces are uncomfortable with the milder heat produced by these systems. Other people prefer the warmth produced by heat pumps because heat pumps distribute heat evenly throughout the home, office or building, meaning there are no cold spots. A heat pump also should turn on and off less often than a gas furnace, and most systems have eliminated the blowing of cold air through the vents that used to occur when the system temporarily switched into reverse to defrost the coils.

Before installing a heat pump, consideration must be given to what kind of supplemental or backup heating may be needed when the heat pump can't work efficiently. Many heat pumps use supplemental electrical heating, but also some kind of oil burner or an adapted gas furnace may be in the equation. Whatever type of heating system most common in a given area is likely the most efficient and cost-effective backup method.

Air-source heat pumps have about the same dehumidifying capabilities as air conditioning systems. Consideration must be given to any humidifying or dehumidifying needs a home, office or building has, and to select a system, accordingly.
