About Installation

Note: Descriptions noted below are by no means actual installations instructions.  Installation instructions vary per manufacture, unit type and or size.  Installation manuals are provided with system purchased and can be downloaded from the product page associated with unit purchased.

Ductless air conditioners in most cases are easy to install.  Unlike a window or portable air conditioning unit which are easily pulled from a box, inserted or vented through a window, plugged into a wall outlet and running in a short time, there is more involved with a ductless system then just plugging it up and turning it on.  Ductless split air conditioners involve a little more installation.  They have 2 major components which must be installed and because they are split air conditioning systems, air and moisture must be removed from the interconnecting tubing's before it is turned on.

1.) The outdoor unit usually sets on mounting blocks which landscape nicely on the ground or can be set on any deck type.  Optional wall and roof top brackets are available if needed.  The outdoor unit will require a dedicated 120 or 230 volt electric line depending on the unit.

2.)  The indoor unit should be installed high (about 6' off the floor) on the wall inside of the space being conditioned.  The indoor unit is the part which blows the cold air in the summer and if a heat pump model is selected, will blow hot in the winter and cold in the summer.  The indoor unit will set (hang) on a provided bracket which will be screwed to the wall.  A 3-inch hole for the interconnecting cables to run through, is usually drilled through the wall near the bracket, before the indoor unit is set in place.  As the indoor unit is set in place, the indoor unit will cover (hide) the hole.

After the indoor and outdoor units are placed, interconnecting cables (the refrigerant tubing and electric lines) will need to be connected at both units.  The refrigerant tubing lines connect to both units with flare fitting, there is no need for soldering or brazing.  The few electric connections on both units are color coded.

As consumers buy split type air conditioners direct (usually to save a lot of money), they are acting as their own contractor and usually install most of the air conditioner themselves.  They will install (hang) the indoor unit bracket, drill a 3 inch hole and will install the interconnecting refrigerant tubing's and electric lines between the indoor and outdoor units.  Some will hire different types of contractors to do the installation, perhaps a handy man guy in the neighborhood to drill the hole, hang the indoor bracket, and connect the lines between the indoor and outdoor unit, then call an electrician to wire it up.

After this part of the installation is accomplished, consumer will hire a qualified HVAC technician for final inspection and start up, which will include inspection of all electrical connections and a pressure test to assure there are no leaks in the refrigerant tubing connections.

Technician should preform the pressure test with dry nitrogen, which is the preferred method in the HVAC industry.  As the tubing's are pressurized, a leak test can be accomplished with liquid soap around the flare fittings.  If the soap bubbles, the flare fitting can be tightened until the bubble goes away.  This is an old school method for the HVAC guy, however inexpensive and very effective.  Next, as all connections check secure (no leaks), any air and / or moisture accumulated from condensation in the lines during storage and shipping, will need to be evacuated out of the system with a vacuum pump, which is also a common tool in the HVAC industry. The evacuation is a very important process and usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the system, some tech's prefer longer. The evacuation will put the refrigerant tubes in a deep vacuum (moisture boils at a low temperature under a vacuum), vaporize the moisture, then pull the vapor and air out of the tubing's. Keep in mind; moisture and air do not mix with refrigerant, which is a major component of the cooling chemistry.

Inspection of all electrical connections (before power is applied) that all connections are tight and are connected to the proper terminals. Inspection of drain hose would also be necessary to assure the water flow would always be in the downward position. (Water Only Runs Downhill)
